The White Gypsy (Audio Drama Recommendation)

Updated: May 1, 2023

The White Gypsy is a book written by Annette Lyster in 1881. I have not personally read the book, but I hope to soon. Today I want to recommend to you the audio drama version of the story, produced by Lamplighter Theatre.

The White Gypsy is one of my favourite audio dramas. In this adventure you will experience the tragedy that the Fehr family suffers and discover the mystery that surrounds it.

You will meet nine-year-old George Killian, who is worried about a gypsy boy he meets. When his older brother helps him find the boy, they discover that he is not a gypsy at all. The question is, "Where did he come from?"

Will is troubled by his unknown past, but clings to the verse that his father taught him as a young boy: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9)

As the mystery unravels, Will is taunted by scenes from his past, unable to make sense of the painful memories. Meanwhile, George fights jealousy as a new boy—one he calls “sulky, overbearing, and arrogant”— comes between his and Will’s friendship.

Gilbert thinks his mother might have loved his late brother more than she loves him, even though she denies it. In fact, maybe she wishes that Gilbert would have died instead of him. She did say Gilbert was “disagreeable”, and his uncle sees him as a troublemaker…

Things begin to go downhill when Gilbert makes some unwise decisions after offending Will. The boys’ characters are put to the test, and when wrong turns are made, people suffer. Everything seems to be going wrong, but could it be that God has a much bigger plan?

You will be encouraged and inspired by how the mysteries are providentially resolved, bringing healing and redemption.

I highly recommend this audio drama to you and your family. There are some intense scenes, so I would not listen to it with younger children (eight and under). You can purchase the audio drama (CD or MP3) and book here: https://lamplighter.net/product-tag/author-annette-lyster/

Be strong and courageous!
