As we wrap up this series on glorifying God, I want us to all spend a moment looking at the ultimate example of glorifying God. His name is Jesus. Jesus lived His entire life glorifying God the Father. Never once did he give into temptation, never once did he think a sinful thought.
Our Example and our Help
As you strive to live a God-glorifying life, you can look to Jesus. Not only is He an example, but He is also a help. He is only a prayer away. He is not a distant being, and His perfection should not push us away. Hebrews 4:14-16 says “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Glorifying God will not always be easy. When you determine to live this way, you can be sure that temptation will follow. Our human nature is to glorify ourselves. We must fight this everyday in Christ’s power, and seek His grace in time of need.
Jesus' Prayer
Our verse for this week, John 17:4, is Jesus’ words. It is what He said in prayer just before going to Gethsemane where He would be arrested.
“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” John 17:4
This is what I hope to be able to say at the end of my life. We never know when the end of our life might be. Let’s determine to live to glorify God now so that we’re ready to give an account to Him.
Here’s a recap of what we have studied this month:
We are challenged to live a radically God-glorifying life.
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
We ought to glorify God, in actions and thoughts, because He bought us.
“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” 1 Corinthians 6:20
We glorify God by bearing fruit, and we bear fruit by abiding in Christ.
“Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” John 15:8
“He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5b
We glorify God now so that we can say with Jesus at the end of our life:
“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” John 17:4
In Christ,
